Harriet Tubman was an American abolitionist, humanitarian, and an armed scout and spy for the United States Army during the Civil War. Born into slavery, Tubman spent most of her life working on plantations in the South. After escaping with her family, she made thirteen missions to rescue over seventy enslaved families and friends using a network of abolitionists and safe houses known as the Underground Railroad. Traveling by night and in extreme secrecy, Tubman (nicknamed "Moses") “never lost a passenger." She also worked for the Union Army and was the first woman to lead an armed expedition in the war. Before her death, Tubman helped abolitionists and was an active participant in the women’s suffrage movement.
