Martin Luther King Jr. was an American Baptist minister and activist who was a leader in the Civil Rights Movement. He established the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, an organization focused on non-violent protests for civil rights. King also helped organize the 1963 March on Washington where he delivered his famous “I Have a Dream” speech. He helped plan the Selma to Montgomery marches and fought against segregated housing. He strongly supported non-violent civil disobedience and refused to use guns. MLK has been awarded over 50 honorary degrees and accolades and in 1964, King received the Nobel Peace Prize for combating racial inequality through nonviolent resistance. Thanks to efforts by his wife, January 15th is Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
